About HobbyHQ

A structured, independent reference for hobbies, sports and crafts — built to be genuinely useful before it is comprehensive.

Almost everything worth taking up is badly explained somewhere between a retailer’s blog post, a governing body’s PDF, a fourteen-minute video and a forum thread from 2016. The knowledge exists. It is just scattered, and nobody has an incentive to put it in one place — the retailer wants you to buy, the club assumes you already know, and the video is answering a different question.

HobbyHQ exists to do that assembling. For each activity we work through, we set out what it actually costs, what to buy first and what not to buy at all, the mistakes almost everyone makes, the words you will meet, the rules where there are rules, the safety and legal position where either matters, and what to do when it goes wrong.

Hobbies, sports and crafts, together and in balance. The catalogue currently holds 1538 activities — 848 classified as hobbies, 448 as sports and 503 as crafts, with plenty counted in more than one because they genuinely are more than one.

There is no cap on that number and no intention to stop. What limits growth is the standard, not the shelf space: an activity gets a page when it has been written properly, and until then it lives in the catalogue as a classified, searchable entry that the hobby finder can already recommend.

  • Not a listicle site. There is no “top ten hobbies” page and there will not be one. Rankings without stated criteria are decoration.
  • Not a shop. We describe what a class of equipment does and how to choose within it. We do not maintain product recommendations, because keeping them current is a full-time job and doing it badly is worse than not doing it.
  • Not an authority on rules or law. Where a governing body or a statute owns the answer, we say so, summarise it and link to it — and say plainly that the source takes precedence.
  • Not a health or safety service. We flag risk and point at the people who are qualified to manage it.
  • Not padded. A page exists when there is something to say. Most of the catalogue does not have a page yet, and we would rather say that than generate one.

HobbyHQ is a HEKNO product. It is editorially independent: no club, governing body, retailer or manufacturer has paid for coverage or for a favourable assessment, and none has any say in what we write.

The site is designed to carry advertising through a central platform, with limits set here rather than there — no page carrying a safety or legal warning is commercially eligible, and neither is any page we have not written up properly.

Being wrong about a rule, a price, a technique or a legal duty is worse than being silent about it, and on a site that covers this much ground we will be wrong sometimes. Every page carries a last-reviewed date, every sourced claim shows what it is sourced to, and every source shows whether an editor has actually verified it.

If something here is wrong, we want to hear about it — particularly on rules, law and safety, where being out of date is the most likely failure and the most consequential. Tell us, and see what we have already had to correct.

More on how our recommendations and priorities work, how we handle evidence and accessibility.
