Tell us we are wrong

Every page here is written by people who are not experts in every subject on it. Being told what we got wrong is the mechanism that makes that acceptable rather than reckless.

HobbyHQ states rules, legal positions and safety points, and it cites where each came from. That makes the claims checkable, which is the point — but only if being checked leads somewhere. This is where it leads.

The most valuable report you can send is not “this is wrong” but “this source does not say that”. We have already found 0 cases of that in our own work, and removed 11 sources that turned out to be dead, mismatched or superseded. The register of what we have and have not verified is on the sources page.

Report a problem

Nothing you type here is transmitted. The form assembles a report and hands it to you to send.

What kind of problem?

Optional, and the single thing most likely to get the page changed quickly.

Your report

This is the message, assembled from what you have written above. Nothing has been sent anywhere — it exists only in this browser until you send it.

Safety and legal reports come first. If you tell us a safety or legal claim is wrong, the claim comes down or is marked as disputed while we check it, rather than staying up until we have finished arguing about it. A wrong safety claim left standing for a fortnight is worse than a gap.

Everything else is checked against the source. We re-read what we cited. If the source does not support the claim, the claim changes — not the citation. If the source itself turns out to be wrong or superseded, it moves to the removed list with the reason recorded, so the negative finding survives.

Corrections are made in the open. Substantive changes to a safety, legal or rules claim are noted on the page rather than edited silently, because a page that quietly stops saying something has not really admitted anything.

What we will not do is soften a claim to make a complaint go away. Where the honest answer is that something is uncertain or disputed, the page says so and stays saying so. You can see that in practice on the evidence standards page.

Things we have already got wrong

Published because a corrections policy with no corrections behind it is a statement of intent, not a record.

  • Crochet hook sizes. Our conversion table disagreed with the Craft Yarn Council standard we cited for it. The table was wrong; it has been corrected and the disagreement is recorded rather than quietly overwritten.
  • Taking wood for whittling. We stated the legal position more simply than the Theft Act 1968 actually does. Section 4 draws a distinction our page had flattened, and the page now carries the distinction.
  • Home brewing law. The Act every hobby site still cites was repealed in 2023. Our page cited it too. It now cites the legislation that replaced it.
