Knitting vs sewing
These produce similar things by opposite routes, and the difference in route decides almost everything else — the cost of starting, how long a project takes, how portable it is, and what happens when you get something wrong. Neither is harder; they are difficult in places that suit different people.
The decision this settles: You want to make your own clothes or soft furnishings and both crafts are in front of you. This is the one about which to learn first.
Where they genuinely differ
Marked per row rather than overall — “better” only means something relative to a specific dimension.
| Point of difference | Knitting | Sewing |
|---|---|---|
| What you need to startThe largest practical difference. One entry cost is trivial and the other is a purchase decision. | A ball of yarn and a pair of needlesAdvantage here | A sewing machine, or a great deal of patience with a needle |
| How long a first project takes | An evening for a dishcloth; weeks for a garment | An afternoon for a simple bag or cushion |
| How long a garment takes | Weeks to months | A day to a weekendAdvantage here |
| Undoing a mistakeKnitting is unusually forgiving and it changes how it feels to learn. | Pull the yarn and it is gone. Nothing is wastedAdvantage here | Unpicking is slow, and a mis-cut piece of fabric is finished |
| Where you can do it | Anywhere — a train, a sofa, a waiting roomAdvantage here | At a table, with a machine and space to cut out |
| Fitting a body | Adjusted as you go, and the fabric stretches, which hides a lotAdvantage here | Fitting is the whole difficulty, and it is a genuine skill in itself |
| What the maths is like | Gauge — stitch counts and dimensions that follow from a swatch | Pattern grading and seam allowances, on flat pieces that become a shape |
Knitting
Somebody who wants to start tonight, has no table and travels a lot
Knitting costs almost nothing to try, fits in a bag, and is the only one of the two you can do on a bus. If it does not suit you, you have lost the price of one ball of yarn.

Somebody who wants clothes that fit and wants them this month
Sewing produces a wearable garment in a weekend where knitting produces one in a season, and the fitting skill it demands is exactly the thing that makes home-made clothes better than bought ones.
More on SewingBoth are pattern-following crafts before they are creative ones, and in both the step that beginners skip is the one that decides whether the finished thing fits — a gauge swatch in knitting, a toile in sewing. Skipping it feels like saving an hour and costs a project.
They also share a second-hand economy worth knowing about. Sewing machines and knitting needles both last decades, both turn up constantly at a fraction of new prices, and in both crafts the equipment somebody inherited is frequently better than what the same money buys new.
