Pool vs snooker
The difference is not difficulty in the abstract, it is tolerance. A snooker table is roughly twice the length of a pub pool table with rounded pockets barely wider than the ball, so a shot that drops all evening on pool rattles out on snooker. That makes snooker slower to reward and deeper to explore. Pool is available everywhere, cheap, sociable within a week, and has a rules problem snooker does not.
The decision this settles: You have enjoyed knocking balls around and want to take a cue sport more seriously. Your local has a pool table and there is a snooker club twenty minutes away. You want to know which is the better use of the next few years — and whether starting on one ruins you for the other.
Where they genuinely differ
Marked per row rather than overall — “better” only means something relative to a specific dimension.
| Point of difference | Pool | Snooker |
|---|---|---|
| Where you can actually playThe most practical axis. Snooker clubs have closed steadily and in many towns there is no longer one within reach. | Almost every pub and club. A table is usually a pound a game and always free on a league nightAdvantage here | A dedicated club, usually with membership and table hire by the hour |
| How forgiving the table isThe single biggest difference in how it feels to learn. Pool rewards you early; snooker makes you earn the first satisfying session. | Small table, generous pockets. A shot that is slightly off still dropsAdvantage here | Twelve feet of table and rounded pockets barely wider than the ball. Slightly off rattles out |
| How long a frame takesA genuine lifestyle difference. One fits into a night out and the other is the night out. | Five to fifteen minutes. You can play several between rounds | Twenty minutes to an hour. It is an evening rather than an interval |
| Rules clarityA real and underrated advantage of snooker. Almost every pub argument about pool is two people correctly applying different rulebooks. | Three codes in common use — English eight-ball, blackball and American — which disagree about fouls, free shots and nominating | One rulebook, essentially universal, and disputes are rareAdvantage here |
| Cost to take seriouslyPool is close to free to pursue and snooker is not, which is the second reason snooker participation has fallen. | A £30–£80 cue and league fees of £20–£60 a season covers itAdvantage here | Similar cue money, plus table hire that adds up quickly — an hour or two a week is a real recurring cost |
| Depth once you are goodIf the appeal is a game you can still be improving at in twenty years, snooker is the larger canvas. | Real, especially in safety play and position, but the small table limits how far positional play can be developed | Considerably deeper. Long positional sequences and break building are a genuinely lifelong studyAdvantage here |
| Fitting a table at homeEffectively decides the home question. Smaller snooker tables exist and play so differently that they teach a slightly different game. | £400–£2,000 second-hand, and about 5.5 × 4m of clear floor for a 7ft tableAdvantage here | A full-size table needs a room around 6.7 × 4.6m and weighs over a tonne. Realistically, no |
| Whether skills transferWorth knowing that the transfer is asymmetric. Learning on the tighter table makes the looser one easy; the reverse is not true. | Cueing, position and safety thinking all transfer upward, and pool players find snooker pockets brutal at first | Snooker players are usually strong at pool immediately — the tolerance runs the easy wayAdvantage here |
Pool
Somebody who wants to play regularly, socially, near home, without much money and without much waiting
Pool is available everywhere, cheap, handicapped leagues take beginners from the first week, and you will enjoy your first session. Ask which of the three codes is in force before the first break and most of the frustration disappears.
More on PoolSnooker
Somebody with a club within reach who wants a game to study for decades rather than play tonight
Snooker is deeper, has one universally understood rulebook, and the tighter pockets build a standard of cueing that makes every other cue sport easy. Budget for table hire and accept that the first month is genuinely unrewarding.
