Rowing split converter

Split, distance and time are three views of one number, and an erg shows only one of them. Give it two and it returns the third, plus what that split would mean over the other standard distances.

The question this answers: “I did 2,000m in 7:30. What split was that — and if I want to hold 1:55, what would a 5k take?”

Included because it is the one figure that compares across sports. Nobody in rowing uses it.

Arithmetic rather than a prediction. Holding a split over 2k and over 10k are different things and the tool has no view on whether you can.

Split: 1:52.5 /500m. Distance: 2000 m. Time: 7:30.0. Speed: 4.44 m/s. That split, held over: 500m in 1:53 · 1000m in 3:45 · 2000m in 7:30 · 5000m in 18:45 · 6000m in 22:30 · 10000m in 37:30

Split is time divided by distance, scaled to 500 metres. The other two directions are the same relationship rearranged. The reference distances are the ones erg sessions are conventionally built from and are shown as arithmetic rather than as predictions.

  • That the split is the one the monitor shows — time per 500 metres — rather than a speed or a pace per kilometre. Rowing is one of the few sports where the standard unit is time per fixed distance rather than distance per unit time.
  • A constant pace. Real pieces are not held evenly, so a split computed from a whole piece is an average rather than a description of any moment in it.
  • It sets no target and predicts no performance. Holding a split over 2k and holding it over 10k are different physiological problems and this tool has no view on whether you can do either.
  • It says nothing about watts, drag factor or damper setting. Watts relate to split by a machine-specific formula that belongs to the manufacturer, and drag factor is a setting rather than a result.
  • It is not a training plan. What to row, how often and how hard are questions for a coach or a club, and this catalogue does not publish training prescription.
